Purpose of being a Sun City Pom

The purpose of our club is to entertain and be ambassadors of good health and fitness. Our motto is “Age is Just a Number.” We hope to inspire others to realize growing older sometimes open doors to new, exciting adventures. We perform at various venues, ranging from assisted living facilities to high schools assemblies, as well as march in numerous local parades throughout the year.

While we Poms do grow close as we plan, practice, and perform together, it is our overriding purpose to be out there, as ambassadors — instilling new hopes, new visions, and new opportunities for people who might have thought their life pathways were narrowing.

Three Tiers of Commitment

Marcher: When one first becomes a Pom, they join as a Marcher. All Pom members practice and perform at this level. They perform a marching routine repeatedly throughout a parade route ranging from 1.5 miles to 3.0 miles. The Poms march in seven or more parades a year, including the big Veterans Day Parade and the Fiesta Bowl Parade, as well as many smaller, local parades. A marcher commits to a one hour team practice a week, plus the weekly team meeting.

Team: The second level of commitment is called Team. It entails committing to an additional hour of team practice a week. Team events are those special events which allow adequate space for a larger group of Poms to perform. Past team events have included performing at a Phoenix Suns basketball game and at Del Webb’s ‘Ring That Bell’ July 4th celebration.

Performer: The Performer level of commitment requires a second level of tryouts due to its extra skill requirements. Performers commit to an additional nine or more hours of team practice a week, spread over three days. Performers usually perform 40 to 50 times a year and need to know up to ten or more routines.

How do I apply to become a Pom?

Those wanting to become a Sun City Pom are required to attend and pass a ‘try out’ process, which normally lasts two to three months. The ‘try outs’ are scheduled as weekly, one hour sessions with a veteran Pom, who will teach each attendee basic steps used in Pom routines, as well as a few actual Pom routines. The try out process is used by the Pom’s club to insure prospective new members have the physical abilities (stamina, coordination, balance) and mental skills (memory, patience) to successfully be a Pom.

The easiest way to apply to become a Pom is to fill out the application below and hit ‘Submit.’ You can also email us directly at scpoms@yahoo.com or leave us a voice message by calling 602-392-4242
