The Sun City Poms is a “performance” club. We are made up of women who are 55 years and older, who live in Sun City, and have valid RCSC cards. We began in the late 1970s as cheerleaders for a professional women’s softball team, but have evolved over the years into a group of ladies who love to show the entire world that “age is just a number.” We do this by performing dance routines at care centers, high schools, community events, and more; as well as marching in parades, both small and large.
Why are we Poms? We may each have our own individual reasons, but the most commonly shared reason is that we have begun to understand that advancing in age does not necessarily mean the closing of doors. For many of us in the Poms, it has allowed the opening of new doors. What thirty year old would ever have envisioned, that in their seventies, they would be wearing glittery outfits, performing in front of so many strangers.
But one of the best highlights of being a Pom is the reaction and support of the audiences. We hear so many great comments, like:
- wow, you inspired me to not accept old age
- wow, I can sure see a different future now
- wow, you look GREAT
- I can’t wait to tell my mom/ my grandma about y’all
- you go girls!
There is a LOT of work in being a Pom. The many practices. Having to memorize so many routines. Having just the right shade of lipstick. The nervousness just before a performance. But once you get out there, whether it’s a stage or a street, and you see/hear/feel the audience — you realize that perfection is not what they want. They are there to be entertained. And entertaining, we definitely are.
If you have time to browse through the History section of this website, we encourage you to do so. You will see, for all these decades, all these women kept saying the same message over and over — Age is just a Number. If you look at those pictures from the past, you won’t see size 6 women with gymnastic backgrounds. You will not see divas, starlets, upper crust. You will see women, all shapes/sizes/colors, that care more for others than themselves. And you will see an united group of women not fighting against age, but enjoying age for what it truly is — new opportunities.
